Finishing The Semester Strong While Keeping Your Health In Mind

Happy April everyone! This month marks the end of this semester and the beginning of a new one. With seemingly innumerable amounts of responsibilities coming into view for you to complete (such as finals, papers, projects, and non academic matters) this time can possibly cause you to experience a great deal of stress and anxiety. As a rising senior, I can confirm that this time can be pretty taxing on both your mental and physical heath, so below, I've comprised a short list of tips that you can use to help you navigate through this hectic month:

1. Stay Consistent with Attendance:

Towards the end of the semester, I know it's easy to experience burnout, and at times, going to class can seem dreadful. But going to class (even if attendance isn't taken) will keep you up to date with lessons and material, allow you to be aware of any updates or additional information about the course, and will help you to maintain a regular schedule (which can be good for your mental health)

2. Catch Some ZZZ's

A huge part of college culture is the tradition of pulling "all nighters" for exams and papers, especially during finals week. According to the CDC, adults (people between the ages of 18 and 60) need at least 7 hours of sleep per night so that one can be alert, productive, and healthy*. Don't believe the hype: usually, straining yourself to stay up until 4am on the morning of an exam in order to go over your notes *just one more time* isn't going to impact your grade very much (but it can effect your mental ability and confidence)

3. Take Time for Yourself

While yes, you should put in effort into doing well and achieving your goals for the semester, it is also important to regularly take breaks or rest days. Constantly putting pressure upon yourself to do everything can be poor for your health and wellbeing. During your rest days, take out time to do things that bring you the most joy and contentment!

4. Don't Neglect your Health & Listen to Your Body

Even though you're busy, continue to go to (or schedule) appointments with your health care providers and therapist as needed. Your health is a priority in every circumstance, and remember to only go as far as you are comfortable with and capable of doing. There isn't any shame in doing whatever is necessary to preserve yourself.
