Happy Black History Month!

Black History month (also referred to as African American History Month) was formed in 1925 by historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, Carter G. Woodson. Woodson created this celebration (which was initially a single week) in order to recognize and magnify the many important contributions that Black people within the diaspora have added to our society. In 1926, during its first official commencement, Negro History Week was celebrated during the week of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass’s birthdays. By the 1950s, Negro History Week had become nationally recognized and popular within African American communities. In the 1960s, the “Black Awakening” (a period that was sparked as a result of the Civil Rights and Black Consciousness Movements) helped to further uplift the concept and importance of Negro History Week, and in 1976, the celebratory week was expanded to an entire month. Till this day, Black History Month has remained an integral and well recognized tradition within our society. During this month, try to take advantage of the events, functions and opportunities that are being made available around campus and also take out some time to learn more about our history!
